CHAPTER SIX
SATURDAY began with a miserable wet dawn, but Phinn could not be down. She’d had a restless night, and awoke to know that her love for Ty was no figment of her imagination. It was still there this morning and, while she would take great care that he would never know of it, it gave her a feeling of joy to know that he was here, at home.
She did not want to think of how it would be when he went back to London, but decided that for the moment she would just enjoy knowing that he was sleeping under the same roof.
Phinn showered and dressed early and, with her hair pulled back in a band, slipped quietly out of the house.
It was while she was talking to Ruby that Phinn realised she must have begun to fall in love with Ty as far back as when he had offered them a home. Incredible as it seemed, it must have been then. She clearly recalled thinking then that there was something not right about it somewhere. Now she knew what it was—some sixth sense had been trying to warn her that before too long she was going to get hurt.
Too late now to do anything about it. She was in love with him, and that love was here to stay. She knew that.
When Phinn went back to the house, both Ty and Ash were at breakfast. All at once feeling a sudden eagerness to see Ty again, she hastened up the stairs to wash and tidy signs of the stable from her before going quickly down again.
‘Ty wants to take a walk around the estate. Coming with us?’ Ash asked.
Normally she would have liked nothing better. But, sensitive to the two brothers, she thought that perhaps they might need some brotherly time together, and they would probably talk more easily if she were not there.
‘ve a date with…’ Pure wickedness made her look at Ty—there was a glint in his eyes that said he was listening, and was daring her to have a date with the vet. ‘With a pitchfork, a wheelbarrow and, by special request, Jimmie Starkey’s compost heap.’
‘Whatever turns you on,’ Ash replied, and, with a smile, ‘If you prefer mucking out the stable to a morning spent in fascinating company…’
Phinn grinned at him, affection for him in her look, and real pleasure in her heart as she noticed how his appetite had started to pick up. With luck that twenty or so pounds he had lost would soon be put back on again.
‘Did you sleep well?’ Ty butted in sharply.
Taken by surprise, Phinn turned to him, startled. ‘Do I look haggard?’ she queried.
One sleepless night and she looked a wreck!
His answer was to study her for all of one full minute. And, just when she was thinking that she was going to go red at any second, ‘You look quite beautiful,’ he answered, so entirely unexpectedly and sounding so much as if he meant it, that she did blush.
